Counteract the Narrative of Despair

March 5, 2015 / Marjorie Larner / What We Can Do

First thing every morning before you arise say out loud, “I believe,” three times.

Ancient Wisdom from Ovid

I have made a list for myself to refer to on the mornings when I wake lost in the darkness. Then I discipline myself to choose at least one hopeful belief that gives me energy to work.

I keep adding to the list with ideas from colleagues, friends and students. What can you believe that gives you hope to rise out of despair into action?

I believe today I can…..

spark excitement in others in a topic, skill or step

get smarter

find time to talk with a colleague about our practice

turn an assigned task into an authentic project

reach a disengaged student

be heard by those with power

influence policies

find inspiration

access the love to keep going
