Better to Show Up

May 26, 2015 / Marjorie Larner / What We Can Do

“I am going to do my best to try to create a country in which children are not living  in poverty, in which kids can go to college, in which old people have health care. Will I succeed? I can’t guarantee you that, but I can tell you that from a human point of view it is better to show up than to give up.” Sen.Bernie Sanders

I like this way of thinking about our efforts and our struggles in education. Better to show up than to give up.

What is your version of this pledge from Sen. Sanders as he announces his run for the U.S.Presidency. What are you trying to do by showing up?

My Pledge

I am going to do my best to support teachers and principals in school buildings to engage children in relevant learning, to give them opportunities for experiential learning, to develop connections with each other across age and background, to see possibilities for themselves. Will I succeed? I can’t guarantee you (or me) that but as a human, I will show up, not give up.
