Sometimes I wonder if we have discovered any new wisdom or really only rediscovered for ourselves. And so, we are connected, bonded, tied to each other through times and places of humanity. These are still many of the principles we try to live and our current version in parentheses). Does this prove we’re right?
Every book must be chewed to get out its juice. (we say: interact with the text to make meaning)
The path of duty lies in what is nearby, but men look for it in things far off. (start with the local and know yourself as a base for learning about others)
Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. (there is so much information in the modern world these days, we teach how to learn rather than fill students’ heads with what to learn)
He who asks a question may be a fool for five minutes; he who asks no questions stays a fool forever. (questions lead us into text, into learning. Curiosity leads to learning)
No one is more afraid of ghosts than those that don’t believe in them. (denial and blinders are dangers to seeing what is)
To know and know that you know, not to know and know that you don’t know, that is to know. (keep an open mind as if you’re a beginner)
To learn about other people is science, to learn to know yourself is intelligence. (reflection on learning so you know your own thoughts and find meaning in the learning about others and the world)
Being in the right does not depend on having a loud voice. (use structures so that every voice can be heard and everyone can listen)
The real scholar is not afraid to ask questions of his pupil. (as teachers, we learn from our students every day)
Before you plan to improve the world, look around your own house three times. (you can only change yourself)
Harming others means you first harm yourself. (when people are hurting they often bring their hurt outside of themselves to others. disruptive students are usually in some sort of discomfort)
If we do not change our direction we are likely to end up where we are headed for. (insanity to keep doing the same thing and expect different results. Find new perspectives)
Tell me and I forget. Show me and I remember. Involve me and I understand. (EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING!)
