Face the Fire

December 10, 2014 / Marjorie Larner / What We Can Do

“Fatigue makes cowards of us all.” Vince Lombardi

“Do not give into discouragement or fear for more than one hour.” That is a note I posted on my computer this week. An hour was plenty of time to waste indulging the emotion before figuring out how to get that emotion out of my system and get back to work. Face the fire.

I found it helped to get up, move down the hall, find someone to talk with, however briefly, to remember it is not only me who feels urgency to get things right for our kids and our world. It is not only me who has dreams for our kids and our world.

Most of all, by encountering another person, adult or child, I remember that we are working for a purpose bigger than my one day’s task.

“We cannot seek achievement for ourselves and forget about progress and prosperity for our community. Our ambitions must be broad enough to include the aspirations and needs of others, for their sakes and for our own.”   Cesar Chavez, United Farm Workers
