Moral challenge of the day

April 22, 2015 / Marjorie Larner / What We Can Do

“Leadership must meet the moral challenge of the day.”  Jesse Jackson

Environmental degradation, endless testing, valid evaluation of teacher effectiveness, developmentally healthy time to learn reading, writing, math, student engagement vs compliance, 19th century educational model for millennial kids, poverty, racism…….which challenge do you take on in your teaching?

I have been interviewing teachers about what they are doing in their classrooms that they believe is good for their students’ lives. One common thread I’ve found across all teachers no matter the content or grade level–they are basically mission driven. They see underneath whatever activities, skills, or content to a bigger picture of what this will do for their students to learn who they are in this world and how they can apply their learning with a purpose in this world.
