December 31, 2014 / Marjorie Larner / What We Can Do

The sun is starting to set on this last day of 2014–poised at a point looking back on a year that held promise and threat  and looking ahead to opportunities and challenges.

My son has an idea for New Years Resignations–things you are going to stop trying to change and just accept. I think I will do those after the first week in January when I have had a chance to try my resolutions.

I am not imagining what lies ahead because if I have learned anything this past year, it is that there is always a twist to whatever we expect. Disposition, habits of mind, attitude, and will are what I will depend on to prevail with whatever surprises and twists arise.

2 traits I’ve noticed in people having impact through their work this past year: discipline and strength–discipline to stay focused and do the work that is necessary  and strength to bounce back and persevere.

I would also add connections—to people who make our work joyful and collaborative and to a vision that gives our hard work purpose and meaning.
