Toward What Purpose?

August 16, 2015 / Marjorie Larner / What We Can Do

Tomorrow I  re-enter a school building after several weeks away. I am trying to suspend expectations but they are there.  I wonder if people are going to have hope or already losing spirit.

In many schools, we hold an agenda that is in competition with the powers that say test scores are a valid assessment of student learning and progress. I say: toward what? What are we preparing our children to be? What kind of life and livelihood and meaning?

For those of us who carry the dream of public education that matters for every person, I take this day to sustain hopefulness.

And this cartoon from Joel Pett: what if its a big hoax and we create a better world for nothing?
