What do we teach our children about safety?

October 4, 2015 / Marjorie Larner / What We Can Do

Your own safety is at stake when your neighbor’s wall is ablaze.
Horace

No matter how many locked doors, lockdown drills, sign-ins and badges we require in our school buildings, when we are not taking care of our suffering and angry and dangerous weapons are available to them, we will be at risk.

What can we teach our children about this state of things in our country as they grow up? We can teach them to be aware, talk about what they see but what do we teach them about how to live and thrive like this? What do we teach them about how to stay strong inside? Courageous enough not to hide? Do we teach them to still love, still hope, still give and be open to new people and experiences?

Perhaps we could learn something from people who have been living in war torn countries. What do they teach their children?
